Even if it’s only in 2007 that Redux name makes it appearance on the electro scene , Nikko – the
man who hides behind this guise – has been a familiar name in the more up-tempo register with
not less than 20 releases along with Karbon 14 sound system in the mid 90’s. Keeping his experimental approach of music, Redux, having achieved maturity, doesn’t need to force the pace anymore to captivate and electrify the crowds and starts to flirt with a vibe more
close to electro-house and breakbeat.

Very fast he signs a first e.p. on American label Portamento but it’s in 2008 with the title ‘‘Diskobreaks’’ that he puts the basis of a more personal style which kicks straight in with its
pounding analogical bass lines and fractured sounds harmonized with rhythms and samples from
hip-hop, funk or disco. First selected on Level 75’ “Spicy Cunts” compilation then released on Katorza - a nu label he runs with Maelstrom – in 2009, this track has gained much respect and support from International artists such as Popof, Crookers, Rico Tubbs, Aquasky, Malente, Cut la Roc or Lee Mortimer to name a few. Redux follows up this successful run with several critically acclaimed remixes on Katorza and not less than seven original pieces signed on Miles Dyson’ label PlasmaDigital. Meanwhile he works and composes the soundtrack for electro circus show ‘Sweatlodge’’ including “Cirkalia” and “Bassline Circus” tracks released today on Expressillon aside dancefloor-lifting “Bouncing Pigs”. Hulton himself is well known for a slew of top quality releases on labels like Against the Grain, iBreaks, Illeven Eleven and Rat itself, while Deekline has been firing up the dance music scene like never before in 2010 following a spectacular 12 months which saw the launch of his new label with Tim Healey, Giant Pussy Records, and victory at the international breakbeat awards, Breakspoll, where he took best album for his collaboration with Wizard, Back Up Coming Through.

Penfold is one of Cambridge’s hidden gems.

Spoken Word Tongue Fu

Like a nice glass of a red or a decent bit of fluff, good spoken word is hard to find. At worst you feel like you’ve stumbled across an open group therapy session with an AABB rhyming scheme. At average, you’ve let yourself into a struggling poet’s focus group. Sometimes though, you magic across an event that manages to vet out the bilge and leave you with a select line-up of spoken wordsters excelling in lyrical dexterity and vocal originality. If it’s not Apples and Snakes then chances are it will be some set-up at Rich Mix. Tonight’s Tongue Fu is a cacophony of words, jazz, improv and will set the bar for future knowledge of the spoken word scene. When I saw Shoreditch inundated with unbranded white posters and a line drawing of a girl stating I’m here, I was immediately suspicious, for it was the all too familiar smell of brand whoring. Soon enough, I noticed the introduction of Absolut Vodka in their posters. When brands do their ‘hey we’re ambassadors for the arts, we’re cool and we understand you’ I start snolling (snorting and eye rolling) uncontrollably. HOWEVER, having said that, I admit, the whole thing is temptingly cool. For one, it’s free. It’s in a car park. And it’s Spike Jonze. Supposedly, Absolut backed him to create a film about anything he liked, so what we have is a love story of two robots living in LA. As long as you ignore the Absolut man in jeans and a youthful tee going on about their vision of making ordinary life more interesting (I’m sorry, did I just vomit a little?), we all just might be a little impressed. / Vanessa Morrish

LMG - Interview with Alex Young

A rising star of the UK Outsider Art movement, Alex Young is currently preparing for his forthcoming solo show with London Miles Gallery on Thursday, April 1. Succeeding his hugely successful debut show ‘Exhibitionism’ at the Grenade Gallery in 2008, Young’s new body of work looks set to expand his artistic and conceptual horizons to even loftier new heights.

Traversing the boundaries of Fine Art, Illustration, and Graffiti, Young revels in his inability to be pigeonholed. Finding inspiration in the work of both Classical and Contemporary Art masters, as well as various cannons of popular culture, his finely detailed pointillist style portraits are a trademark of his studio work. Rendered predominantly in spray paint, Young’s primary medium of choice points to years of dedication to bombing the streets as a writer – an endeavor committed to alongside years of formal art training.

Keeping separate his Graffiti and Fine Art guises, Alex Young, the artist, draws upon the similarly rich dichotomy’s evident in other pseudonymous individuals. His subjects include a burlesque dancer, S&M model, and heavy metal guitarist to name but three, whose alternate identities are all revealed through the fine illustrative detail and multi-layered symbolism evident, on closer inspection, within his monolithic portraits. Essentially, Young is reaffirming the age-old adage that one shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover; in turn condemning the widespread societal prejudice exhibited when confronted by these individuals.

A graduate of Kent Institute, and recognized as one of the UK’s top 60 most talented University leavers by Creative Review magazine in 2002, Young resided in Brighton for seven years, working predominantly as a freelance illustrator, before relocating to South London in early 2010, where he currently lives and works.

In contrast to his gallery work, his heavily stylized illustrations are primarily informed by the D.I.Y, sub-cultural paradigms of skateboarding, punk, and comic book culture of the mid-to-late-80’s. Instantly gratifying and provocative, these works display Young’s quintessential Outsider art credentials.

Speaking to him in-depth about his experiences and inspirations, it’s clear that Young is an artist continually co-opting the multitude of influences that play upon his mind. Ahead of his second solo exhibition this spring, he talks with great enthusiasm for everything from Close and Kandinksy to calligraphy and comics, giving an up close and personal insight into the foundation for his new show, and his wider artistic endeavors to date.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and first interest in art?

I was born into soaking up a lot of artwork, a lot of different stuff. Neither of my parents are artists but their knowledge of Art History is incredible. Growing up my sister and I got dragged around loads of exhibitions. My old man used to work for British Airways so we traveled a lot and every port of call we’d hit the art museums. Then in the mid-80's, when the big explosion of hip hop culture hit England, I lent more towards the graffiti side of things. That was the most exciting stuff for me: growing up in west London and seeing tags get put up, but not really understanding what they were and that it was a sub-cultural thing. Some of the first stuff I saw was skateboard graffiti and I became a skateboarder as well, so I got into these two subcultures and found a lot of comfort in them.

Skateboarding was one of those freedom activities. It was as much about hanging out and being part of something as it was being rad at it. The same with graffiti; you might not be the best stylistically but you might have done more than anyone else, you might just be out there every day. Same with skateboarding; you might not be the best but you're out there everyday; you're the dude, you're ‘that’ guy. It's all on your own terms; it's within your group, it's not societies terms. It was this kind of fraternity of weirdo's where it's like “Fuck that way of life, you're all right. Come in here, and do this, and get respect from your peers, and how good does that feel?”

Another appeal about skateboarding was all the graphics on the boards. I came into skateboarding in the late 80's when it was the era of skulls and snakes and dragons - Powell Peralta style - and then it went into World Industries which was much more radical and really offensive - just real shock stuff and constant parodies of other things in popular culture. The appeal of all those graphics was the fact that they were just rad for rad's sake; whereas the art education system was asking: “Why have you handed in this project of this monster fighting a robot with lasers coming out of their eyes?”

Daydream Network backstage at Basso and Brooke, a fashion week favourite

Backstage today with Basso and Brooke, a fashion week favourite for us. The show was as always super organised, every checked and rechecked to make sure all the looks were immaculate. And that they were, with Basso and Brooke signature mesmerising prints taking centre stage in the form of long flowing dresses, structural tailored jackets, and elegant separates, with some patterns emulating snakeskin, jewels and big knit.

Shoes were high and bright, the heels spiky and strong, as structural as the tailoring. Once again, a sure trend for Autumn Winter 10/11,we saw long leather gloves, in complimentary colours to the dresses, and clashing print scarves artful woven around necks. One of the highlights to the collection was this floor length draped dress, with a high neck at the front and deep revealing back, truly elegant.

This designer duo is a firm favourite for both onlookers and those behind the scenes, as not only have they amazing vision and create gorgeous garments, but are both probably the nicest blokes in fashion.

Backstage at London fashion week with Daydream Network, having a peek at Richard Nicoll and Lousie Goldin at the Flowers Cellars in Covent Garden, the Topshop NewGen Venue for this season.

Richard Nicoll took inspiration from his menswear roots for this collection, featuring beautifully constructed tailoring, but with a romantic twist, soft tulle shapes, form fitting corseted dresses and sheer and velvet panels. Overall, the collection was very wearable, with shades of greys, rusty red and slick blue, with the devil in the details; a sky high black patent heel (actually sourced from a latex fetish shop) bull dog clip jewellery with Swarovski embellishment and cute 90’s backpacks. The team behind Richard Nicoll’s creations was as ever bursting with pride as the clothes went down the runway, and softly spoken Nicoll modestly smiling in the background.

Louise Goldin’s collection was all about dramatic shape and structure. Wire shaped skirts and dresses were packed with cushions and coaxed with tacking to stay in their impossibly architectural designs, with impressive effect. A collection that Goldin describes as “space military” felt like a glamorous star trek, with stingray edging and detailing alongside peeks of Swarovski shorts under skirts. The glitter didn’t end there, with leggings and mammoth heels completely covered in Swarovski (making them near impossible to get on, but none the less amazing). We saw more leather and fur here, but the most striking detail had to be the stingray skin, which a tired seamstress informed us was pretty impossible to stitch, hence her ruined hands. The price we pay for fashion eh?

Another look at fashion week, and the Off schedule shows are proving just as crowd pulling this season, with both Jacob Kimmie and Jasper Garvida packed out to capacity.

After running up seemingly endless stairs we arrived just in time for Jacob Kimmie’s Pilgrim collection. Vauxhall fashion Scout is again this season at Freemasons Hall, and the ornate rooms used for the catwalks made for an original setup, with the models parading through two rooms. A strictly monochrome palette, featuring filigree style jewellery and face masks, was strongly linked to a theme of life and death, with long veils and dresses in both black and white. We saw extremely chunky knit, this season seems to have gone back to the chunkier the better, and again leather gloves and arm warmers. The apparent life and death theme was strongly reinforced when the finale look came out dresses head to toe in white carrying a baby, also clad in white. This met murmurs of both success and disapproval, though definitely caused a stir as everybody left discussing it.

Straight onto Jasper Garvida, downstairs in the Freemasons hall. This collection, ‘Venus’, had a strong link to Art Deco, with architectural tailoring and structural pieces, a green geometrical print holding some sections of the collection together, although on the whole it seemed quite disjointed. Again we saw leather gloves and detailing, along with cashmere and plenty of sequins in every imaginable style. With a very Deco palette of dark forest green, greys black and some soft pink, the selection of both long and short dresses with deep v-cut backs and tailoring was renminiscent of the 20’s glamour, with very gangster-speak-easy- like feel from black trilby hats tipped to one side and bright red lipstick.

London Fashion Week

Fashion Week has been in full swing since last Friday, and Daydream has been checking out some of both the on schedule and off schedule shows, and some of the other going-on’s around town.

Kinder Aggugini showed on Saturday at the BFC tent at Somerset House, his 3rd show for LFW. The show was elaborate, with candelabra’s and statues on the catwalk and long sweeping dresses a focal point. The light floaty fabrics of the maxi-dresses was made more appropriate for Autumn/Winter with the inclusion of tailoring and military style jackets, fur, knit and tweed detailing, and flashes of red and green within the mostly black palette.

There was talk of perhaps a theme of mourning to his collection, arrived at from the long black dresses and drama of the catwalk, although the skinny trousers, and flashes of red and leather gave the collection a sexy, rock n’ roll edge too.

We also popped down to 20 Beak Street, to see Carnaby’s contribution to fashion week, a small exhibition space for alternative designers. It was a really interesting space, with highlights being Miss Jacqueline White'st-shirts designs and Neon O’Clock Works amazing head pieces. Definitely worth checking out this week.

Welcome to the Oh-Death newsletter.

Well it has been a long time coming but I'd thought I'd take time to thank all of you for your purchases since I started printing back in 2007. New Brow, The Rise of Underground Art.

London Miles Gallery is proud to host the premiere UK screening of Contemporary Art documentary, New Brow - The rise of Underground Art, a feature film presented by Humble Pictures.The documentary features some of today's most influential and groundbreaking artists from the New Contemporary Art movement, such as Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Silvia Ji, Gary Baseman, Shag and many more, who speak openly and enlighteningly about the growing art movement and its origins. The documentary not only includes first-handaccounts from an impressive list of pioneering artists, but also showcases the important galleries and collectors who adopted, and continue to drive the New Contemporary Art movement today.

New Brow has been the official selection of the San Francisco Film festival, Rader Hamburg Film Festival, The Tulsa United Film Festival, The Hot Springs Film Festival and the Golden State Film Festival. New Brow premiered at the 2009 Golden State Film Festival where it received the second largest attendance behind a special screening of Star Wars, the Empire Strikes Back. It has been screened in cities across America and has made its way to Europe, Australia and now to London this February.

London Miles will be screening New Brow on the following days:-Saturday the 20^th of February at 4:00pm
